What is a Watershed?

The term "watershed" refers to an area of land within which all rainfall, snowfall, and runoff drain into a common body of water. Watersheds can be big, like the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which spans several states, or they can be small like Parkers Creek. While federal and state programs are keeping an eye on the health of large watersheds like the Chesapeake Bay, small watersheds often go overlooked. However, they are just as consequential for the people, plants, and animals that live in them. In 2019, ACLT began forming "Watershed Friends Groups" to look out for the health and enviornmental protection of Calvert's many small watersheds. Do you know which watershed you live in? What are Watershed
Friends Groups?
Friends groups are the eyes, ears, and advocates of the watershed. Composed primarily of watershed residents, these groups do on-the-ground and community-based work, making watershed stewardship a meaningful interaction between “friends” in the community and the natural ecosystem. These groups work to educate watershed residents about what is going on in the watershed, connect people to the watershed through recreational excursions, and mobilize others to be stewards of the land.

Why Does ACLT Support Friends Groups Outside of Parkers Creek?
Because Parker’s Creek does not exist in a vacuum! The health of the surrounding watersheds will inevitably help the health of our own, and at large, the Chesapeake Bay region. We want to help our watershed neighbors protect the resources and environment that they care most about.

ACLT currently works with six friends groups in Calvert County. Click on the names below for more information about each group. Interested in joining a friends group? email mary@acltwweb.org
